The First

"I think of the first Despair sometimes," said Despair. "It must be over a hundred thousand years since anyone thought of her but me..."

"I was very scared. She--I--had been such a grand lady. And now I was simply me..." -Despair

When I think of the first Despair, I think she must have been beautiful and terrible and sad and horrible at the same time... A closer twin to Desire, with the same beautiful frightful edge. The same malicious glint in those eyes. A great contrast to the poor current Despair. The new Despair is a rather pathetic creature, subject to the whims of her sibling Desire. I see the old Despair as a more equal twin, less a subordinate, and more willing to go her own way when she chose. But also more likely to follow the same path as Desire, more willing to trample the wills of others under her heel. And this must have made it even more frightening for the new Despair, having to follow such a strong and independant and imposing character, whereas she was a more lowly and sad creature.
