Calton Hill is another of the hills of Edinburgh. It stands as the place for monuments, including two observatories. The most famous monument, however, remains unfinished. The National Monument was initiated in 1816, a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, as a memorial to those who died in the Napoleonic wars. It was to be a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, but instead only one wall of columns was completed due to a lack of funds, and it was known as "Edinburgh's shame." Of course, it makes a far more interesting landmark in its incomplete state. The Nelson monument, an upturned telescope, commemorates his naval victory (and death) at Trafalgar.
