In 1767 New Town was begun, as a necessity because Old Town was too crowded, and was also well known for its stench from the crowded conditions and lack of proper drainage. North Loch was drained, and currently holds Waverly Station and Princes Street Gardens. While Princes Street is now considered the main street, the parallel George Street with its gardens on either end, between Princes and Queens Streets, was originally designed to be the main throughfaire.
